Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get. This is an excellent TV. You can read a lot of positive reviews about the EX500-32 on Amazon that will give you sufficient detail about the Sony Bravia EX’s. Start with those reviews and note the differences between the 500 and 700 are:

- Video Processing : BRAVIA Engine 3(tm) Technology:
Many of the LCD tv companies share the production of various parts, including the screen. One of the major differences between the brands is the software that drives it. The EX 700 has the Bravia Engine 3 driving it. The EX500 and lower have the Bravia Engine 2. The Sony rep told me that Sony makes 90+% of the digital cameras and equipment so they have the software advantage when it comes to interpreting those inputs to get the output (the tv). Take this for what it’s worth coming from a rep, but it’s something to consider when comparing TV brands. With the Bravia 3 engine you know you have the latest available.

- The EX700 has a motion sensor (Presence Sensor) that turns off the TV when nobody is in the room. I think this is important because heat can damage your tv. If you accidentally leave it on your risk of damage is lessened by the auto-off. Also, this will save some $ in energy bills.

- The EX700 has Motionflow 120Hz Technology for Smooth Motion, the EX 500 does also. The EX400 does not.

DEEP blacks - seTclock - New York
As an owner of a 50″ Pioneer Kuro, you can say that I am an HDTV snob when it comes to black levels and contrast. I truly missed the details seen in dark scenes on old CRT televisions when I first made the switch to HD with a 50″ Sony Grand Wega. Though this EX700 does not attain the Kuro’s degree of black level, it comes close, and as I have purposed it to be my bedroom TV, I am more than satisfied. The black levels are not the only strength of this set. The overall picture quality is superb… with a good HDTV signal. This is it’s Achilles heel. This Sony is awful with standard def programming. I did not remove a single star for this fault, as I don’t watch standard def TV. I purchased an HDTV to use it to watch sports, news/history/science and film, all in HD. Look at the (televisioninfo period com) review for this set and see not only the recorded black levels, but the overall review of picture quality and uniformity. That was the review that sold the set for me and I am glad I trusted it. In my research I did not find a 32″ set with better black levels, but if you’re fine when scenes of a night sky are shown as a field of gray with white dots interspersed then this review means nothing to you and you’ve wasted your time reading it!

Just received my KDL710 last night. Was restricted to something under31″ in width to fit in bedroom armoire. Would have liked a Samsung for the great picture but this is replacing one which had 2 failures and the company refused to honor the warranty (will NEVER buy a Samsung product again). So far the Pros: Ease of setup, perfect fit in my space, very nice picture (although I haven’t had time to adjust to my liking so I’m sure it will be better); love the auto off sensor; no feelings on the LED feature yet. Cons: Menu is very difficult and complicated to navigate; no sleep timer on the remote and you have to go through at least 3 steps to get to it; adjustment directions very sparse and confusing. I suppose most of these will work out as I get familiar with the set. Sony quality has never been an issue with me which is why I paid top dollar for this 32″ set.

Updated Review - 10/15/10:

Now that I’ve had a chance to adjust controls I’m very satisfied with my choice. Picture is crisp and sharp and I’ve gotten used to the remote and sleep timer (use it every night). When you’re in a store and looking at TVs side by side some look brighter than others or crisper but when there’s nothing to compare it to this is a wonderful picture. It is only 120mgz so it is not the best for gaming (who cares) but for everything else it’s A1 (a Sony of course). I don’t believe the Google version is an LED backlit which explains the price differential. I paid the same price online from Dell (it was delivered in 2 days). Enjoy your set.

Customer Review

Pros: An excellent TV. The picture is awesome. Very good viewing angle. I have never seen a 32″ TV display HD content so well. The menu options are vast. The colors are deep, rich , and vivid (pun intended). Also, Sony’s vivid color mode has been improved greatly (tried it on a 2005 TV, the colors looked cartoonish). The USB ports are awesome. Simply plug in a USB stick, and show off your pictures, or play your music.

Cons: Well, the sound is OK. but, honestly, what they heck are you expecting out of that little speaker? The default color settings were AWFUL. This thing required quite a bit of calibration to get it looking like it should (if anybody wants the settings, reply with a comment, and I will give them). The picture out of the box is why I docked this a star.

Other thoughts: As said many times before - UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE. The download is available from Sony.

The TV can loaded with the latest firmware. It arrived in excellent condition, no damage to the box. Setup was simple. My Oppo 83 is hooked directly into a HDMI port; the picture look superb. I just wish I had bought two at 7; the price is back up to 9. My Roku goes into a second HDMI port, and it look great.

This was my first HDTV so I went a little crazy comparing all the models out there. It’s for my bedroom so I knew I wanted a set around 32”. This TV is PERFECT! When I bought this at a local store they had all the 32” sets side by side and this one blew them away. The blacks are black, the colors are vivid and the picture is SHARP. I have it hooked up to cable (720p), a blue ray player (1080p), and a Wii; they all look amazing. The sound with the bluray player is also very impressive for in TV speakers. I’m definitely going to look at other Sony Bravia products for my next TV. I now want a 50” for the living room so if you have suggestions let me know

I have owned this TV for over a year and it has performed satisfactorily. It was relatively expensive when I purchased it but it is worth every penny. Picture quality on this TV is outstanding when playing Blu Ray or Regular DVD Movies. Digital TV pictures look great too but standard definition pictures look awful. This may not be the fault of the TV though. One minor shortcoming I noticed is that it has mediocre digital tuner. Because of this it does not receive good signal with regular indoor TV antenna unless you spend some money for a quality antenna such as the CLEARSTREAM2 Antenna.

Even though Sony does not advertise it as having high refresh rate this TV show smooth picture during sporting events. The newer Bravia series for whatever reasons are inferior to this TV in performance. I am not upgrading any time soon.

You can be watching a show and the the sound goes completely out. Flip the channels back and forth and the sound will come back, very annoying, otherwise I like the looks and picture.
