While portable audio devices are constantly changing in technology, they have remained a popular accessory for several years now. The latest portable audio devices can deliver higher quality audio than the devices of a generation ago because of an increased digital storage capacity. It is no longer necessary to use compression formats that compromise sound quality. What many people don’t realize is that this means that in most cases, the weakest link in sound quality on the modern portable device is the headphones.

Currently there are three popular styles for portable audio device headphones. These popular styles are the inner ear piece, ear buds, and over-the-head cans. By far the most common are the traditional over-the-head cans. These basically look like two flat or cupped pieces that attach to the ends of the arm that hugs your head. The arm is generally adjustable in length or cup attachment to allow it to fit any size head.

The inner ear piece is generally a composite of a soft synthetic material and plastic. Having it go right into the entrance of the ear allow you to get a full surround sound feeling without any of the audio escaping. Generally the inner ear piece is considered a much better choice for comfort and sound quality than the ear buds, which just fit at the edge of the opening to the ear canal.

Generally, Apple’s inner ear piece is considered a good choice for sound quality and range, particularly for younger listeners with a full hearing range. The Apple earpieces do cost more than most. Apple’s inner ear piece can provide high quality sound even at high frequencies. However, the cable for the Apple inner ear piece is only 42 inches long and many people also find that the ear pieces don’t fit in their ears quite right. The good news is that Apple has tried to address this issue by making their rubbery inner ear headphones in three different sizes. It should be noted that these Apple headphones don’t tend to have a very strong bass. But this is partially made up for by having the headphones deliver the bass without sound loss near the eardrum.

The ear bud may not provide quite the audio quality of the over-the-head-cans or deliver the audio as directly as the inner ear piece, but the ear bud does provide a nice combination of fitting in the ear with a better sound quality than the inner ear pieces. They also tend to be the most portable type of headphones. They can be easily stored in any case and discretely placed in the ears. They work particularly well when used with devices that aren’t specifically for music, such as portable gaming devices, laptops, portable televisions, and radios. Most portable audio devices these days come with a stock-set of ear bud headphones. They can be very convenient when you need something discreet and easy to carry, but aren’t typically used as primary headphone sets for listening to music.

What about a good reason to get a 1080p lcd TV ?

First of all, what IS a 1080p panel? The panel or screen display is what you are watching and it is built up of pixels or PICture ELements. Or, PIX. ELS. That is where the name comes from.

OK here’s the thing, the pixel count determines whether it can display a 1080p picture in native mode inside lcd tvs.
Why? The 1080p panel has a fixed pixel number of 2,073,000 pixels and can only display in that format, so everything that doesn’t fit the panel must be processed or expanded to fit.

This is how any lcd TV or any digital flat panel tv, like Plasma hdtv, with a fixed number of pixels works.

A 1080i (With lines) picture is fed to the processor inside the TV, and becomes 1080p (No lines), simply by adding the lines together. This is called Upconverting or upscaling, or expanding the video signal.
What a computer does with all types of files, it can “Zip” and “Unzip” them. Except when video files are zipped, or Downconverted, they don’t appear to lose quality. But when they are unzipped, or Upconverted, they may appear to lose a LOT.
This is because the imperfections of a lower resolution signal are expanded along with the good stuff. On the other hand, the apparent quality of a DVD is improved by removing the lines, a major improvement for any signal. Remember here, we are talking about streaming video files, to borrow a computer term.

A Real 1080p picture or signal can only come from a Blu-Ray disc player or a PS3, or an Upconverting DVD player, at the moment, but more options will become available as new technologies are created. And it looks great on a 1080p panel.

The signal is displayed just as it comes from the player at 1080p, via a hdmi cable, and this is the easiest to use cable option currently for 1080p connection.
Any other signal like Free To Air Broadcasts which are either 720p (No Lines) or 1080i (Lines) will be upconverted or kind of “Unzipped” in the built in video processing hardware inside the hdtv set, to 1080p.
Naturally the quality of lcd panel and the quality of video hardware will mean the best results. See “10 Bit” below.

This leads to a special case of cheaper sets being sold with lcd flat panel types which have an 8 bit or 6 bit panel and corresponding processing hardware. Now when these sets have a 6 or 8 bit panel, for very involved reasons, you can almost bet that it will be a fast panel. Simply because the math that the circuitry needs to perform on the video signal is easier, and faster, so takes less time. These are usually smaller screen sizes usually less than 26″, and it is also possible that it is a panel originally designed for computer display.

Which explains the weird screen resolutions like 1440, 1280, etc in advertisements. Avoid these types of screens unless you are using it for a PC. Although some look good with a PC, and bad with TV, some are bad with both. Meaning cheaper, no name brands.
On the other hand, 10 bit panels can be made as fast using new technology, and they will have to be much higher quality, because generally they are made only by a few well known manufacturers.
Only a select group of manufacturers actually make their own glass for lcd flat panels.
How To Pick An LCD TV that contains a cheap panel? A sure fire method is:
Stand close to the screen and either look down at the screen, or look up at the screen from below.
If the picture changes color or becomes negative, bingo. Don’t buy it.

10 bit lcd flat panels are more than fast enough to handle the display of 1080p video signals and 10 bit video processing is also much higher quality, better for movies etc.

That being said, surprisingly one of the best panels to get if you are a sports nut is 720p. It is also cheaper then 1080p. Video displayed on this type of panel is lower detail but better for high speed motion. This lower detail is not really noticeable unless you get a very big screen. Especially if you go for very large screen sizes, like 50″, or larger, it will be very obvious that is 720p.
Any benefit of 720p will be canceled out with a LCD TV 1080p display with 120hz refresh. This technology is becoming very common now. It means that any benefits of 720p, namely for sports etc, are negated. We’ll leave that subject for a later discussion.

The take home message from all of this is, 1080p is the display of choice for people who want to take advantage of hdtv to the maximum. But You must stick with known name brands when selecting the best lcd tv from the wide range of models with 1080p panels. That way, you ensure that you get at least a 10 bit panel and at minimum 10 bit video processing.

As an example, many LCD hdtv sets use 14 bit video processing and 10 Bit 1080p panels in their range.
A high quality LCD TV 1080p will reproduce TRUE HDTV, this will ensure you get an LCD TV contrast ratio that is at the highest level, and brightness levels and color gradations are the best possible and therefore ensuring quality picture reproduction.

Panasonic VIERA TC-P42G25 42-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV Review

This is first plasma tv after owning a rear projection tv for 9 years. I like to do a lot of research before buying any electronic goods and it led me to choose plasma over lcd for a televison.

One of the drawbacks you hear about plasma tv’s are the energy consumption as well as burn in issues. The panasonic tv is apparantly much lower in energy compared to older plasma’s and are not far off lcd’s for energy consumption. Also, the image burn in, although can still be a problem when simple guidelines are not taken, is not really a factor anymore.

I purchased the tv through amazon and it was delivered in the allcoated timeframe that I chose when I purchased the tv. The gentleman unpacked the tv and installed the tv onto the supplied base stand which sat on top of my corner tv stand. The tv is fairly heavy and is actually quite difficult to push over. This was a concern of mine since we have a young daughter but the tv is far enough back that she cannot reach it. There is also a hole in the panasonic base where you can drill a screw into your own stand and I plan to do this.

The tv picked up our cable channels no problem and the remote and option guide by panasonic were easy to use. The picture quality of the HD channels through my cable were excellent and considerably sharper and clearer than my old projection tv. We mostly watch all of our cable tv on the available HD channels and we are very happy with the picture quality. We don’t have a blu ray player but hooked up my Ono up-conversion dvd player and when we watched Sherlock Holmes we were blown away. I cannot imagine what blu ray must look like and we only had our old component cables hooked up (plan to get HDMI cables soon). What was most different from my old tv were the dark scenes. They were so much easier and clearer to see and I guess one of the advantages of plasma over lcd are the black levels. It made the movie so much more of an enjoyable experience. I do not have surround sound but the speakers are adequate and of good sound quality. Like I said we have a young daughter so we cannot have the tv on too lound when she is asleep.

One of the other reasons we bought this tv were the options it has such as netflix, youtube and skype. Skype is not available until some time in the summer and I cannot wait to have videocalls with my family overseas. It does require a LAN adaptor if your internet is not close by to hook up and it would have been nice if this was included in the price of the tv. There is one available that comes with the panasonic blu ray player I plan on getting (DMP BD-85) which is wi-fi enabaled. However, in the mean time I have netflix through my Wii and the picture quality was much better than I though it would be for streaming movies. We have verizon fios so have a fairly fast wi-fi connection.

Overall I am very happy with this tv and am looking forward to many years of tv and movie watching.

Five or six years ago, any review of MP3 players would have focused almost exclusively on the Apple iPod – because that’s basically all there was right then. Oh, sure, some other companies had previously produced gizmos they called MP3 players… the best of which were capable of handling a few dozen songs.

Then Apple had the audacity to market a portable music platform that could hold literally thousands of songs – and the 400-pound gorilla of the digital music world was born.

The Basics

Once the dust settled, the other electronics manufacturers went back to the drawing board and tried again. They did eventually figure it out, and now any decent review of MP3 players has to take two broad types of player into account.

Like the iPod, some modern players use a computer-type hard drive to store music. The other type uses flash memory. Both technologies have grown exponentially in the past five years, and can now pack gigabytes of audio into surprisingly small spaces.

About that Gorilla…

Any review of mp3 players still has to start with iPods, which now come in a variety of styles: e.g., the Shuffle, Nano, Classic, and Touch. Only the Classics still use hard drives; the others use flash memory. All are top-quality, excellent picks you can’t go wrong with.

The latest generation of the Classic and its serious competitors, like the Microsoft Zune, can hold up to 30,000 songs – more than 10 weeks’ worth of audio. That’s pretty amazing to those of us who can remember when 8-track tapes were the finest recording media ever.

Their incredible capacity for the price (about $245, versus $150-200 for an 8-16 GB flash player) makes the latest generation of hard-drive based players very attractive. But no decent review of MP3 players would be complete without pointing out some of their negative aspects as well.

Today’s modern flash memory models are actually the much-improved descendants of the low-density gizmos mentioned at the beginning of this review of MP3 players. So how do they rate?

Their biggest benefit is their complete lack of moving parts; their biggest drawback remains their limited capacity. You have to ask yourself, though, if you really need space for 30,000 songs. Flash players come in capacities ranging from 512MB to 32GB (128-8,000 songs), which is plenty for many of us.

Any fair review of MP3 players has to feature SanDisk’s line of flash-memory MP3 players, which offer great quality (but relatively low capacity) for as little as $30 or so. Similarly, Creative offers the MuVo, another line of low-cost, high-quality flash player that can, in some cases, double as a USB flash drive.

The Verdict

The best flash MP3 players, like Sony’s Walkman and iPod’s Nano, are of exceptional quality and durability – but for the price, you may as well get a high-density hard-drive model. Even the best flash memory-based MP3 player will have a capacity that’s maybe a fourth of a good hard-drive player’s.

It all comes down to what’s more important to you: capacity or price. If our review of MP3 players has convinced you that shock-resistance and economy are more desirable, we recommend the Creative Muvo or SanDisk MP3s; otherwise, you can’t do better than an iPod Classic or Microsoft Zune.

Five or six years, any review of MP3 players have focused almost exclusively on Apple iPod – it is basically everything was right. Oh sure, some other companies had previously created gadgets called MP3 player … the best of which can handle a few dozen songs.
