Kodak Playsport Zx5 vs Flip UltraHD - No Comparison
Posted by admin | Posted in 1080p Full HD Articles | Posted on 07-11-2011
There’s no denying that the Flip UltraHD (3rd Gen) is a slimmer, slicker version of the company’s MinoHD, making it a fine pocket camcorder. But, sadly, Pure Digital’s products just haven’t kept up against serious competitors like the Kodak Playsport Zx5.
Flip pocket camcorders are the ulimate in ease of use. Uploading to social media sites requires only plugging in the USB arm and pressing a button. Your YouTube video is ready to share with the world. But the newly-released Kodak Zx5 is now just as simple to operate and it has many more options including all those of the Flip plus many more.
The UltraHD has nowhere near the storage space of the Zx5, either. The higher-end UltraHD 2 HR model offers just that - space for 2 hours of video recorded at 720p. Even at the highest setting 1080p (Full HD) the Playsport Zx5 can hold up to 10 hours of video on a 32 GB SD card.
The two case designs are similar in one way, but radically different in another.
The size and weight of each one is about the same. The Flip UltraHD is 4.16″ high x 2.11″ wide x 0.88″ thick. The Zx5 measures 4.4″ high x 2.3″ wide x 0.7″ thick. The two weights are almost identical: the Zx5 weighs 4.4 oz vs 4.5 oz for the UltraHD.
Where you can take that case, however, is a major difference between the two models. The Kodak Zx5 is waterproof as well as dustproof, and shockproof. Dive under the waves down to 10 feet for two hours and capture whatever you want. The Flip will work fine in normal outdoor environments but you can’t take it underwater. The Zx5 can go on the dusty trail, in the mountains, through the jungle… just about anywhere.
If you plan to use your pocket camcorder only at sporting events, at a concert, or just around town, maybe that won’t matter to you. But the Zx5 is even less expensive than the UltraHD, so why not have that go-anywhere option? Prices shift constantly, true, but right now the Zx5 is about $20 cheaper.
Well, you might give it a miss if there were a big difference in quality. Forget it. The UltraHD does shoot fine quality video but records only at 720p. The Zx5 offers that (at both 30 fps and 60 fps) as well as Full HD (1080p) and a space-saving WVGA setting for the truly needy.
At one time Flip could boast the best 720p quality of any pocket camcorder. It was often as good or better than the 1080p of other models. No more. The Zx5 creates 1080p video that finally lives up to the promise of Full HD.
